SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A New York-based subsidiary of AES Corp. /quotes/zigman/216642/quotes/nls/aes AES -0.34% said that it and 13 affiliated entities have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. As part of a pre-filing agreement with creditors, AES Eastern Energy LP said Saturday it would sell its coal-fired Somerset and Cayuga power plants in New York and close four others in the state that are idle. The parent company wasn't involved in the filing, which AES Eastern said that operating factors including reduced power prices brought on by low natural-gas prices, increased costs of coal and significant costs for air pollution controls left it without cash to pay debts.
